AN ICON…A MUSICAL LIVING LEGEND…”THEE” BLACK BLONDE BOMBSHELL…There is only one HOLLE THEE MAXWELL!
Holle Thee Maxwell was born on October 17, 1945 as HOLLE THEE MARCLA RODE MAXWELL. She recorded singles under the name “Holly Maxwell” in the 1960s-1970s for the record labelsConstellation, (Curtis Mayfield’s) Curtom Records, Smit-Whit, and Star. Her songs “Only When You’re Lonely”, “One Thin Dime”, “Never Love Again”, “Suffer”, and “Philly Barracuda” were regional hits across the country. Today, her singles are sought by collectors across the world, especially in Europe where they call her sound “Northern Soul”.
Holle Thee sang her first song professionally at the age of 5, studied classical voice and piano at the age of 9, and graduated with degrees from both The Chicago Musical College at Roosevelt University and The Julliard School in New York City.
Holle is an accomplished songwriter as well as an incredible singer. Blues superstar, Bobby “Blue” Bland covered one of her songs on his critically acclaimed album Come Fly With Me.
In addition to singing soul, rock, jazz, country and blues, Holle also sings in French, German and Italian. From opera to “Thee” blues (as she likes to call it), Holle Thee Maxwell can sing it all in a way that is distinctly “Holle”.
Holle recorded with jazz great Jimmy Smith, and replaced Tina Turner in the Ike Turner’s band. Holle also worked with The Temptations, Johnny Taylor, The Spinners, The Dells, Fred Williamson,
Captain & Tenille, Reynaldo Rey and many others. Sammy Davis Jr., Redd Foxx, Sydney Poitier, Isaac Hayes, KoKo Taylor, Archie More, Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammed Ali, Slappy White, Lou Gossett Jr., King Curtis and others have all been fans of Holle Thee Maxwell.
Holle’s performances will not disappoint. Her recent performance at the Chicago Blues Festival in 2009 Time Out Chicago asked: “Would you expect any less from a lady who once danced on tables at a high-school cafeteria to promote her latest record?”

Audelco Award Nominee, Cultural Architect and Editor, CHARLES REESE brings his unique literary performance book salon experience to Charm City, the home of the Superbowl Champions, this Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 2pm in the Poe Room at Enoch Pratt Central Library. 400 Cathedral Street, Baltimore, MD. 410.396.5430.
“JAMES BALDWIN A SOUL ON FIRE,” a book version of the critically-acclaimed Off Broadway short play by the Late Playwright and Emmy Award Nominee, Howard B. Simon (1962-2000) is now available at Amazon.com. Edited and guided by the Original Off-Broadway Actor, Charles Reese with a special foreword by David Leeming (Baldwin’s Biographer and former secretary); and coupled with an afterword by Original Actor and Tony Award Nominee, Forrest McClendon (Scottsboro Boys). The book was published by Azaan Kamau/Glover Lane Press, an independent publisher.
David DeWitt of The New York Times declared, “JAMES BALDWIN A SOUL ON FIRE is funny, thrilling and wise buoyed by the passionate performance of Charles Reese in the title role.”
This short performance play book highlights Baldwin’s innermost thoughts as he prepares for a secret historical meeting with Attorney General Robert Kennedy on May 24, 1963 in New York to discuss race relations in America–three months prior to the famous March on Washington. This lesser known Baldwin/Kennedy meeting was also attended by Harry Belafonte, Lorraine Hansberry, Lena Horne, Dr. Kenneth Clarke, Jerome Smith, a young freedom rider and others.
The James Baldwin Literary Performance Book Salon Experience with Charles Reese marks the50th Anniversary of the Baldwin/Kennedy Meeting of 1963. ( Also the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Baldwin’s seminal essay, The Fire Next Time). Reese’s book salon will include some rare archival footage of the Off Broadway play coupled with selected performance readings by Reese from the book and concluding with a lively conversation on the role of James Baldwin as an artist and civil rights activist. Book signing immediately follows the Q&A. Books will be available for$15 USD.
The event is Free and Open to the Public.
