Dave Weiderman
As Director of the Hollywood RockWalk, Dave Weiderman has arranged and supervised induction ceremonies for scores of popular music’s greatest figures. A former working musician himself, he understands the special bond between artist and audience that RockWalk represents.
“When I was a young drummer, I hung out in a Chiacago music store,” Weiderman recalls fondly. “I remember how I felt when one of my own heroes would come in and spend some time with us. Those were very positive experiences for me, inspiring me to pursue my own personal dreams.”
That spirit of musical camaraderie surfaced again in Weiderman’s life when he was managing a music store in Los Angeles during the early 80s. On a whim, he asked visiting Doors drummer John Densmore to autograph a bass drumhead and a local tradition was born; the head soon became a dense tangle of multi-colored signatures. To his pleasant surprise he found that the collection of autographs elicted much enthusiasm, from signers and admirers alike.
Impressed by that warm response and inspired by his own musical heroes, Guitar Center Chairman Ray Scherr expanded on the concept, founding The Hollywood RockWalk in 1985 and turning its day-to-day operations over to Dave Weiderman.
“Call it synchronicity, but the idea for RockWalk actually germinated at about the same time as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” Weiderman notes. “But we were actually first, probably because we decided to start modestly and let the venue pick up momentum as it grew. Our goals have always been a little more personal; I wanted people coming to RockWalk to experience what I did as a young musician, to get that same good feeling about music and make more of a personal connection with their own musical heroes.”
“After ten years the magic of RockWalk is still fresh for me, to be able to stand at one place where so many of my own heroes have been, to look around and see B.B. King, George Martin, Les Paul, Buddy Rich, James Brown, Jimmy Page, Van Halen and so many others. We’re all dreamers at heart, and we always admire and respect those who’ve achieved their own wildest dreams. RockWalk epitomizes that lineage; it’s a place where we can all find common ground.”
